Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her mother the space she required during the day for the love of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great vehicle to engage in activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was aware of her social circle and showed her how to make use of the arts as a way to express herself. While DuVernay was raised within Compton with her family she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still in university. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to look at the trash from a home belonging to a jury member. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
